Choosing the right fixture is as much about proportion as it is about light. This guide walks you through the sizing formulas professional designers use, room-by-room rules, ceiling height considerations and mounting heights for every fixture type.
How to Calculate the Right Fixture Size
Three formulas cover almost every decision. Apply them in order — diameter first, then fixture height, then hanging height.
1 · Fixture Diameter
Works for chandeliers, pendants and flush mounts.
📐 Example: a 12 ft × 14 ft room → 12 + 14 = 26 → choose a fixture around 26" in diameter.
2 · Fixture Height
📐 Example: 10 ft ceiling → 25–30" tall chandelier or pendant.
3 · Hanging Height Above a Surface
For fixtures above dining tables, kitchen islands and counters:
Low enough to light the surface, high enough to see across it.
4 · Multiple Pendants
◈ Each pendant should be roughly ¼ the length of the surface below it. Space them evenly and leave at least 6" clear at each end.

What size chandelier do I need for a 12 × 14 ft dining room?
Room formula: 12 + 14 = 26 → a 26" fixture suits the room. Over the table itself, stay at 50–70% of the table width and hang it 32–36" above the surface. Ceilings over 10 ft? Scale up 15–20% — height makes fixtures read smaller.
How low should a pendant hang over a kitchen island?
Bottom of the shade 32–36" above the countertop — with a standard 36" counter, that's 68–72" from the floor. Taller household? Lean toward 36".
Can I use a chandelier with an 8-foot ceiling?
Yes — choose a compact fixture under 12" tall with a short drop, and keep 7 ft of clearance under it. A semi-flush fixture is often the better-balanced choice at this height; avoid multi-tier designs.
What height should outdoor wall sconces be mounted?
65–70 inches from the ground — roughly eye level — and ideally in pairs flanking the door. For long vertical fixtures, choose a length around ¼–⅓ of your door height and centre the fixture at 60–66".
What bulb colour temperature should I choose?

Do I need an electrician to install my fixture?
